The main United Airlines number is 1-800-864-8331. It's available 24/7, but "available" and "quick" are very different things. Here's how to actually get through, what buttons to press, and what to say once a human picks up.

Getting through the phone tree

United's automated system tries hard to solve your problem without a human. Here's how to get past it fast:

  1. Call 1-800-864-8331
  2. Press 1 for English
  3. Press 1 for an existing reservation, or 2 for a new booking
  4. Enter your confirmation number when prompted — or press 0 to skip
  5. The system may try to handle your request automatically. Say "agent" or press 0 again to be transferred to a live representative
  6. You'll hear an estimated wait time, then hold music begins

If you're a MileagePlus Premier member (Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K), call the dedicated line at 1-800-421-4655 instead. You'll be routed to a priority queue with noticeably shorter wait times — 1K members often connect in under 5 minutes. What to have ready

Rebooking a canceled flight

What to say

"My flight [flight number] on [date] from [origin] to [destination] was canceled. My confirmation number is [code]. I'd like to be rebooked on the next available flight. I'm flexible on [time of day / connecting flights / nearby airports]."

Mentioning flexibility is key. United agents can book you on partner airlines (including Star Alliance carriers) during irregular operations, but only if you ask. They won't always volunteer it.

Lost or delayed baggage

What to say

"I'm calling about a delayed bag. I arrived on United flight [number] on [date] to [airport]. My baggage claim tag number is [number] and my file reference is [number]. Can you tell me the current status and when I can expect delivery?"

Requesting a seat upgrade

What to say

"I have a reservation on flight [number] on [date], confirmation [code]. I'd like to check if there are any available upgrades to [Economy Plus / Business / Polaris]. I'm a MileagePlus [status level] member and I'd be interested in a [paid upgrade / miles upgrade / complimentary upgrade if available]."

Requesting a refund

What to say

"I'd like to request a refund for my booking, confirmation number [code]. [The flight was canceled by United / I'm within the 24-hour cancellation window / I purchased a refundable fare]. I'd like the refund applied back to my original payment method."

For the 24-hour rule: you can cancel any United ticket within 24 hours of booking for a full refund, as long as the flight is at least 7 days away. This is a DOT requirement — no exceptions, no argument needed.
