How to Call United Airlines
Last updated: March 19, 2026
The main United Airlines number is 1-800-864-8331. It's available 24/7, but "available" and "quick" are very different things. Here's how to actually get through, what buttons to press, and what to say once a human picks up.

Getting through the phone tree
United's automated system tries hard to solve your problem without a human. Here's how to get past it fast:
- Call 1-800-864-8331
- Press
1for English - Press
1for an existing reservation, or2for a new booking - Enter your confirmation number when prompted — or press
0to skip - The system may try to handle your request automatically. Say "agent" or press
0again to be transferred to a live representative - You'll hear an estimated wait time, then hold music begins
If you're a MileagePlus Premier member (Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K), call the dedicated line at 1-800-421-4655 instead. You'll be routed to a priority queue with noticeably shorter wait times — 1K members often connect in under 5 minutes. United carried over 170 million passengers in 2024, making it one of the busiest airlines in the world (United Airlines 2024 Annual Report).
What to have ready
- Confirmation number (6-character code, found in your email or the United app)
- MileagePlus number if you have one
- Flight number and travel date
- Passenger name as it appears on the booking
- Credit card used for the original purchase
Rebooking a canceled flight
What to say
"My flight [flight number] on [date] from [origin] to [destination] was canceled. My confirmation number is [code]. I'd like to be rebooked on the next available flight. I'm flexible on [time of day / connecting flights / nearby airports]."
Mentioning flexibility is key. United agents can book you on partner airlines (including Star Alliance carriers) during irregular operations, but only if you ask. They won't always volunteer it.
Lost or delayed baggage
What to say
"I'm calling about a delayed bag. I arrived on United flight [number] on [date] to [airport]. My baggage claim tag number is [number] and my file reference is [number]. Can you tell me the current status and when I can expect delivery?"
Requesting a seat upgrade
What to say
"I have a reservation on flight [number] on [date], confirmation [code]. I'd like to check if there are any available upgrades to [Economy Plus / Business / Polaris]. I'm a MileagePlus [status level] member and I'd be interested in a [paid upgrade / miles upgrade / complimentary upgrade if available]."
Requesting a refund
What to say
"I'd like to request a refund for my booking, confirmation number [code]. [The flight was canceled by United / I'm within the 24-hour cancellation window / I purchased a refundable fare]. I'd like the refund applied back to my original payment method."
For the 24-hour rule: you can cancel any United ticket within 24 hours of booking for a full refund, as long as the flight is at least 7 days away. This is a DOT requirement — no exceptions, no argument needed.
Tips that actually help
- The United app chat is underrated. For many issues, the in-app messaging is faster than calling. You can also text with an agent — less waiting, same results.
- Tweet @United. Their social media team responds to DMs quickly, often within 30 minutes. According to a J.D. Power study, airline social media response rates topped 85% in 2024 for major US carriers.
- Call early or late. The quietest windows are before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m. Eastern. Midday and early afternoon are the worst.
- Premier members: use your dedicated line. The 1K desk in particular is known for fast, knowledgeable service. Always identify your status upfront.
- Keep your confirmation number visible. The automated system moves faster when you punch it in, and the live agent will ask for it immediately.
