The main American Airlines number is 1-800-433-7300. American is the largest airline in the world by fleet size, which means a lot of passengers, a lot of calls, and — you guessed it — a lot of hold time. Here's how to cut through it.

Getting through the phone tree

American's phone system uses a mix of voice recognition and keypad prompts. It wants you to describe your issue — but you can bypass that. Here's the fastest route:

  1. Call 1-800-433-7300
  2. Press 1 for English
  3. Say "existing reservation" or press 1
  4. Enter your record locator (confirmation code) when prompted — or say "I don't have it"
  5. The system will try to handle your request. Say "agent" or press 0
  6. You'll hear the estimated wait time, then you're in the queue

American Airlines operates nearly 7,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations worldwide, with a fleet of roughly 1,500 aircraft — the largest of any airline (American Airlines 2024 10-K Filing). Rebooking a canceled flight

What to say

"My American Airlines flight [number] on [date] from [origin] to [destination] was canceled. My record locator is [code]. I'd like to be rebooked on the next available flight. I'm open to [connecting flights / different times / alternate airports like [nearby airport]]."

During irregular operations, American can rebook you on oneworld alliance partners (British Airways, Qantas, Japan Airlines, etc.). If the next AA option is hours away, ask explicitly: "Can you check partner availability?" Most agents will, but not all offer it unprompted.

Cancellation and refund

What to say

"I'd like to cancel my reservation, record locator [code]. [I'm within the 24-hour window / My flight was canceled by American / I have a refundable ticket]. I'd like a full refund to my original payment method rather than a travel credit."

The 24-hour cancellation policy is federal law. American must refund you if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, as long as the flight is at least 7 days out. Be clear that you want a refund, not a credit — agents will sometimes default to offering credit first.

Lost or delayed baggage

What to say

"I'm calling about a missing bag. I flew on American flight [number] on [date] to [airport]. My bag claim tag is [number] and the file reference from the airport is [number]. Can you tell me the current status? I also need to know about reimbursement for essentials."

Mileage and AAdvantage issues

What to say

"I'm calling about my AAdvantage account, number [number]. I [flew on [date] and the miles haven't posted / need to dispute a mileage expiration / have a question about my elite status qualification]. My flight confirmation was [code]."
