How to Call American Airlines
Last updated: March 19, 2026
The main American Airlines number is 1-800-433-7300. American is the largest airline in the world by fleet size, which means a lot of passengers, a lot of calls, and — you guessed it — a lot of hold time. Here's how to cut through it.
- Main number 1-800-433-7300
- AAdvantage members 1-800-882-8880
- Baggage service 1-800-535-5225
- Hours 24/7
- Avg hold time 20 – 60 minutes (normal days); 2 – 4 hours during disruptions
- Best time to call Early morning (before 7 a.m.) or late evening (after 10 p.m. ET)
Getting through the phone tree
American's phone system uses a mix of voice recognition and keypad prompts. It wants you to describe your issue — but you can bypass that. Here's the fastest route:
- Call 1-800-433-7300
- Press
1for English - Say "existing reservation" or press
1 - Enter your record locator (confirmation code) when prompted — or say "I don't have it"
- The system will try to handle your request. Say "agent" or press
0 - You'll hear the estimated wait time, then you're in the queue
American Airlines operates nearly 7,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations worldwide, with a fleet of roughly 1,500 aircraft — the largest of any airline (American Airlines 2024 10-K Filing). That scale means their call center is always busy, but it also means there are a lot of agents on the line.
What to have ready
- Record locator (6-character confirmation code)
- AAdvantage number if you're a member
- Flight number and date
- Full name as it appears on your booking
- Credit card used for the original purchase
- E-ticket number (13-digit number starting with 001, found on your itinerary receipt)
Rebooking a canceled flight
What to say
"My American Airlines flight [number] on [date] from [origin] to [destination] was canceled. My record locator is [code]. I'd like to be rebooked on the next available flight. I'm open to [connecting flights / different times / alternate airports like [nearby airport]]."
During irregular operations, American can rebook you on oneworld alliance partners (British Airways, Qantas, Japan Airlines, etc.). If the next AA option is hours away, ask explicitly: "Can you check partner availability?" Most agents will, but not all offer it unprompted.
Cancellation and refund
What to say
"I'd like to cancel my reservation, record locator [code]. [I'm within the 24-hour window / My flight was canceled by American / I have a refundable ticket]. I'd like a full refund to my original payment method rather than a travel credit."
The 24-hour cancellation policy is federal law. American must refund you if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, as long as the flight is at least 7 days out. Be clear that you want a refund, not a credit — agents will sometimes default to offering credit first.
Lost or delayed baggage
What to say
"I'm calling about a missing bag. I flew on American flight [number] on [date] to [airport]. My bag claim tag is [number] and the file reference from the airport is [number]. Can you tell me the current status? I also need to know about reimbursement for essentials."
Mileage and AAdvantage issues
What to say
"I'm calling about my AAdvantage account, number [number]. I [flew on [date] and the miles haven't posted / need to dispute a mileage expiration / have a question about my elite status qualification]. My flight confirmation was [code]."
For AAdvantage-specific issues, call the dedicated line at 1-800-882-8880 — the agents there are more familiar with loyalty program rules.
Tips that actually help
- AAdvantage elite members: use the priority line. Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members get nearly instant service. Even Gold and Platinum members see faster routing. Always enter your AAdvantage number at the first prompt.
- Tweet @AmericanAir. American's social media team handles rebooking, complaints, and general inquiries via DM. Response times average 30 – 60 minutes. According to the Airlines Reporting Corporation, digital service channels handled 40% more inquiries in 2024 than the previous year.
- Try the Admirals Club number. If you have Admirals Club access (membership, credit card perk, or day pass), the club's reservation desk is a separate, shorter queue.
- Call at odd hours. The best windows are before 7 a.m. and after 10 p.m. Eastern. Sunday mornings are also quieter than you'd expect.
- Be specific about what you want. "I'd like to be on the 3:15 p.m. to DFW" moves faster than "what flights are available?" Have backup options in mind.
- Use the AA app for simple changes. Seat selection, same-day standby, and basic rebooking during delays are all available in the app — no call needed.
